Overview

The RPG Toolkit is a free, open source project delivering a simple, flexible and powerful tool for the creation of role-playing games on your personal computer.

The Toolkit has various easy to use tools that allow you to put together enemies, special moves and much more with a few clicks of the button.

With its own programming language, RPG Code, you can build unique and personalised game features that make your game stand out.

History

TK3 (Toolkit 3) was the result of nearly a year of solid development.  Much of the version 2 code has been removed completely and rewritten with a fresh new outlook.  It uses features available to modern systems like hardware rendering and advanced sound. TK3 is truly a powerful system. The engine was rewritten in Visual C++ for speed while the editor was still coded in Visual Basic.

The Toolkit went open source in late 2003 and after a slow start development picked up pace after Toolkit Zone became the official site. Over the months a number of contributors, most notably Delano and Colin, have pushed the software further and further. Stability, object-orientated programming, full isometrics...it's all there.

Editor

Game development with the RPGToolkit is performed using an integrated development environment (IDE). All the tools you'll ever need to create a game are right there—of course, you can also import your graphics, programs, and what not because the toolkit supports an unimaginable quantity of file types. The various editors within provide ample functionality, and a friendly interface, enabling you to work efficiently and in style.

The Toolkit 3.x requires several key components in order to run, but after these there are no real minimum system requirements—technically the TK will run on very low-end machines but with highly diminished performance. Hence we quote a set a of recommended specifications that are by no means minimum requirements; you may get a good performance from lesser machines.
