Description
The Game
Dink Smallwood is a lite RPG. Imagine a cross between such classics as Zelda, Diablo, and Monkey Island (with a tiny dash of South Park) and you'll have a good idea of what to expect from the game. It is also freeware, so you can download the whole game for free. If that wasn't enough, some people have made new adventures for the game, called D-Mods. There are tools to create your own adventures included in the download, as well as other user-created tools you can download here.

History
Dink was developed during 1997 by RTSoft, consisting of Seth Robinson, Justin Martin, and Greg Smith. After a little problem (they accepted pre-orders and missed several promised release dates) Dink Smallwood was shipped out to gamers across the United States during January 1998. However, due to a European publisher (Iridion Interactive), the game was only sent to stores in Europe. However, Non-European gamers could still purchase the game through mail directly from RTSoft for the low price of $25 (including shipping). Dink was never a huge hit, but did reasonably well. During the summer of 1999, RTSoft had sold out of all of their copies of Dink Smallwood. There was a bit of anxiety, as Seth said there wasn't any plans on publishing any more copies. But he had a plan, and released the entire game as Freeware within a couple months.
